CAREER PROFILE
GRAHAM HUTCHISON
CEO - Hutchison Entertainment Group Pty Ltd
A prime mover in the Australian entertainment industry since 1968, Graham Hutchison now ranks with the best entrepreneurs in the business at a truly international level.
Graham started his career in the Australian contemporary music business in 1968 as a booking agent with Queensland's biggest entertainment agency.
Success quickly followed success as he booked all of the country's major music acts, giving him the grounding to spread his wings as an entrepreneur.
By 1969, he had instigated Australia's first major Woodstock-style open-air concert, Bishop's Pilgrimage. This event was and is recognised as the forerunner of the many concerts of this kind subsequently held around the country.
The 1970's saw Graham set up concert tours throughout Australia for many high profile Australian and overseas acts. He also instigated the building of Queensland's first two high profile nightclubs and initiated the network of licensed venues for live music, which still underpins the Australian contemporary music scene to this day.
During this period, Graham was also involved in the production and promotion of the first major production shows seen in Australia in the early years of Wrest Point Casino.
The year 1973 resulted in Graham setting up his own entertainment agency, which for twenty-two years was the largest of its kind in Queensland. Soon after, he toured many big name acts such as British Jigsaw, Paper Lace, The Turtles to name a few.
Dozens of other major artists toured under Graham's control throughout the rest of 1970s among them Joe Cocker, Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley.
Further national recognition of Graham Hutchison's status in the industry followed in 1977, when he affiliated with Michael Gudinski in the heyday of Mushroom Records. An Australia wide agency network resulted.
In 1979, Graham set up Queensland's first independent record label, "Peanut Republic Records" that exposed Queensland rock talent throughout Australia. A couple of hit records later and Graham decided to also establish the first Queensland based music publishing company to help the local songwriters gain international recognition and exposure.
Before long, Graham Hutchison was being labelled as "The Man Behind the Rock Explosion".
He was involved throughout the 1980s in tours by dozens of International and Australian acts ranging from Elton John to Midnight Oil.
In the 1990s, Graham Hutchison operated both Australia wide and internationally with the widest imaginable diversity of interest and activities.
Under the banner of the Hutchison Group of Companies, he was involved in Artist Agency, International Touring, Special Event Management and Promotion.
After he initiated a joint venture in 1990 with the Russian Government Agency Gosconcert, he opened an office in Moscow and was then able to bring a whole new dimension of entertainment to both Australian and overseas audiences. His exclusive Australasian and USA touring rights for many thrilling and spectacular acts enabled him to enthral audiences throughout Australia, North America and South-East Asia.
These acts included The Kuban Cossacks, The State Symphony of Russia, The Moscow Chamber Choir, The State Circus of Russia,
Georgian State Dance Company, Red Army Choir & Dance Ensemble amongst others.
Graham's coup in bringing to Australia for the first time the original and complete Bolshoi Ballet etched his name even more clearly into the minds of the leaders of the international entertainment industry.
Some of Graham's many other notable tour achievements in the late 1990s via his directorship in companies have been Australian tours by:
Jose Feliciano, Thelma Houston, Barry Manilow, Randy Crawford,
Don Williams, Natalie Cole, Peter Paul & Mary, Burt Bacharach,
Village People, America, Belinda Carlisle, Air Supply, Dionne Warwick, Leo Sayer, Demis Roussos to name a few.
During recent years tours of The Kiev Ballet, The Siberian Cossacks, Nana Mouskouri, State Ballet of Russia ,Imperial Russian Dance Company, Men in Tutus and the Russian National Ballet have been sell-outs throughout Australasia.
He also now organises tours in Great Britain, North America and Asia for the major Russian attractions. So highly respected is he by the Ministry of Culture in Russia, that the prestigious Bolshoi Theatre asked Graham in 2001, to become the licensee for the Bolshoi Ballet School in Australia, the only school that will ever be set up outside Moscow.
In 2003, once again at the request of the Russian Government, he set about establishing a global structure to take Russia's arts to the world by way of CD's and DVD's. Graham has now completed this enabling every major Russian attraction to have recorded product available worldwide. The Russian Government is so impressed with Graham's contribution to the worldwide support and promotion of Russian arts, that they recently quoted to the Moscow Times that Mr Hutchison has provided the biggest contribution to the international promotion of Russian arts in the last two decades.
Along the way, Graham was proud to become a founding member of Ausmusic and celebrated a very special industry milestone by becoming the longest serving contemporary agent in Australian entertainment history and the leading promoter of cultural attractions.
In the exciting new age of computers, the Internet, satellite communication and global shrinking, his vision will enable his entertainment network to continue to lead the way. In touring, artist management and promotion, and the presentation and management of special events, concerts and theatre productions, the Hutchison Group of Companies will remain a dominant international force.
Among other plans on the group's drawing boards is a dazzling array of ventures in both sport and entertainment both in Australia and Asia.
