The Theatre of Opera
and Ballet in Ekaterinburg is one of the
oldest theatres in Russia. In 90 years of
its existence the theatre has had many names
but the most important thing has been preserved
all this time; it's high creative reputation,
music culture and acknowledgement and love
of the city dwellers.

The history of the theatre represents
the history of transformation into the biggest
theatre of Russia that has federal importance
and is said to be on the same level as the Bolshoi
and Mariinski Theatres. Approximately 160 operas
and 80 ballets have appeared on the playbill of
the Ekaterinburg Theatre. Often the stamp "the
right of the first stage version belongs to the
theatre" could be seen on the playbills of the
ballet.
The history of the theatre contains
a lot of beautiful pages; a lot of brilliant people
have taken part in the development of it. Audiences
of 20 countries and more than a hundred cities
in the former USSR have been fascinated by the
art of the theatre.
Nowadays the theatre presents
varied repertoires that include approximately
40 operas and ballets. It means daily sold out
shows, 270 performances a season and 250,000 spectators
annually. The theatre today a great troupe of
soloists opera and ballet where the experience
of the masters joins the youth and talent of young
dancers among which quite a few laureates of various
contests can be found. The theatre today has a
fabulous orchestra, wonderful choir, and professional
corps de ballet. The theatre today is the preservation
of the best traditions of the past, and the desire
to daily enthral, fascinate and amaze the audience.
The first ballet production by
The State Ballet of Russia was called "The Magic
Flute" and took place in 1914. Since that premiere
the ballet troupe of the theatre has become one
of the best in the country. The State Ballet of
Russia's repertoire is rich in the names of the
Russian and West European classics: "Swan Lake",
"The Sleeping Beauty", "The Nutcracker", "Corsair",
"Giselle", "Silfida", "Don Quixote" "Romeo & Juliet".

The modern productions
by The State Ballet of Russia have been
brought into life by the most famous choreographers
of Russia: U. Grigorovich, N. Boyarchikov,
N. Kasatkina and V. Vasiliev, A. Dementiev
and others. The ballet troupe of the theatre
of 90 people consists of the graduates of
the biggest choreographic schools of Russia,
and it's constantly widening. Most of the
soloists hold honourable ranks and awards
and many of them are the laureates of various
choreographic contests.
